the road less travelled

forest

The Road Not Taken
by Robert Frost
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

It is up to you which road to take. And sometimes the road often travelled really is the right one for you. It is the standard solution, the mass production that is created without taking your wants and needs into consideration. Still sometimes it is sufficient, still sometimes we can mold and form it to fit. But often we can't.

Of course it is easier to travel on a road well travelled. The road is well marked, you know what is lying ahead, there is nothing scary about taking it.

But it can also be terribly boring at best and totally against what you wanted and dreamt of at worst.

In the poem above it seems easy to take the road less travelled but of course in reality it is different. Yes, it can be very rewarding, a great adventure but it is also terribly lonely at times and very insecure. You don't know what awaits you around the next corner, even your next step might let you fall or at least stumble. Others travelling on the main road will often shake their heads about your curiosity and explorations. Your road will be burdensome and slow at times. But once you have started on it, you also notice that it becomes impossible to turn around. You cannot unsee what you have seen, you cannot unfeel what you have felt.

On the road less travelled you have to create your own path, you have to learn and be careful and vigilant all the time. There is no authority you can follow blindly. To the contrary you will often find the experts wrong, you will despair over the ignorance of your main road travelling friends.

Still your travels will fill you with pride. You will be surprised by all the secret knowledge that you come across and all the discoveries that you make. All this will fill you with joy and wonder. You will feel more free every day. It is your journey and you are taking the road less travelled.
